Billboard Music Awards 2015

bbma  Billboard Music Awards 2015

Aside from airing live in over 100 countries (172 exactly), the Billboard Music Awards stands out amongst the other award shows for a variety of reasons. For instance, the “Grammys” are prestigious but their winners are determined by a board of trusties. Billboard is about units and social media. If you can get someone to buy your album in an age where you can stream it for free you’re making good music. I have bought two (2) albums in the past 12 months: Marsha Ambrosius’ “Friends & Lovers,” and Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp A Butterfly.” The latter may be the best hip-hop album in the last decade.
The Billboard Music Awards partnered with Samsung to do the announcing of it’s winners along with showcasing it’s digital home. That means Apple without Steve Jobs is now little brother. Everything about the award show is 21st Century and I loved it. Co-host and wife of award winner John Legend, Christy Teigen, was oddly funny and showed why so many people (including myself) follow her on Twitter. She has no chill, or as we say in England, “She’s a nutter.” I thought she was just the right amount of eye candy and humor for me not to be sick of her like I am LL at the Grammys. Ludacris is so overexposed right now, I was happy to see him as little as possible.

bad-blood-video-taylor-swift-friends-fire-billboard-510The show opened with Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood,”  and while I am not a fan of the country/pop music star, the video was aesthetically pleasing (all of her BFF’s are in the video.) It’s Ethan Hunt meets Neo type of  video (Charlie Baltimore meets Aeon Flux for the ladies.) Kendrick Lamar is the just the best rapper alive and the savior of hip-hop. He’s on the track and in the video so…I liked it.  Van Halen was up next and NOT what I expected.  PMA readers know your boy is all about the history of music. Problem, how do you not sing “Jump”? Second problem,  I don’t want to see David Lee Roth saying he’s going to reach between his legs and have Nicki Minaj readjust his nut sack. I know she’s literally selling herself as a semen receptacle, but that was way out of bounds, and I was not amused.

Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” feat. Charlie Puth was heartfelt and a beautiful tribute to fallen star Paul Walker. Ratchet Twitter was making fun of Wiz and his shirt. Americans don’t know Rock ‘N Roll.  Meghan Trainor and John Legend were “cute.” Hozier and his “Take Me To Church”… flawless. I didn’t enjoy Mariah Carey, it’s time to take a curtain call.

Proving that Billboard is all about now, they had performances from the stars of the Fox smash hit Empire.” I loved hearing and seeing You’re So Beautiful This was an unprecedented year for that cast and that show. Having Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard (Academy Award Nominees) as the backbone of the show was absolute brilliance by Lee Daniels. Having Timbaland produce the music? Insane, having the actors actually being able to sing? Atomic bomb. Next season will be a full season as Fox didn’t think that they public would devour it in the manner that it appealed to the masses.
I was absolutely disgusted that y’all allowed Izzy Azalea to win best hip-hop award. I’m English and I’m disgusted. I’m not a fan of One Direction and couldn’t care less about the band from homeland but it does show that y’all buy their records, and by y’all, I mean teeny bopper’s in both the UK and USA. The best part of the show for me was Meghan Trainor winning for “All About That Bass,” her reaction was pure elation as I’m sure she knew she’d won. (All those who did promos won an award) I like Trainor and I hope she doesn’t turn into something I cannot stand. She’s America’s Adele, song writer and all.
Kanye West
Kanye West closed the show with such vulgarity that most of the song was bleeped out (censured) in the United States. I hate Kanye West. Remember “Through The Wire” and “Jesus Walks?” Yeah, me too. We thought he was going to change the game then he came out with “Bound 2” and I was permanently OFF the Westbound train.
All in all, it was worth the 3 hours it took to put the show on. No surprises tonight: Kanye West is still the biggest wanker on the planet. Having Kanye perform after Swift getting her award was the way to make sure he wouldn’t interrupt her. West should also know he can keep it 300 like the Romans, but “This Is Sparta,” a genius would know that yeah? Kelly Clarkson can still sing and by all appearances is eating well. Taylor Swift is officially a “Cool Kid,” Kendrick Lamar is the King of Hip-Hop, Florida Georgia Line is Country Music, Nicki Minaj is an embarrassment to women, and I wouldn’t want my daughter to admire or aspire to be her nor would I want my son to date her. Chris Brown still disgusts me, J-Lo thinks still thinks she’s 20 and her body looks like it. Not unlike Fall Out Boy, everyone wants to dance like Uma Thurman and the Munsters theme is hot, and Britney Spears is still Tennessee trailer trash y’all.
