Nick Jonas has been hot since last year with his self-titled album with successful pop smashes like “Chains” and “Jealous”. He returned back with his sophomore album and killed it for all those romantics who unfortunately had to call it quits. Last Year Was Complicated was released June 10th and it’s honestly been on repeat through my Tidal subscription.
The former Disney Channel child star has officially Glo’d up as he crossed over from his good boy virgin image to a sexy, grown man who knows how to be sexy, confident, and very much open to emotions after a breakup.
The album is a mature sound resembling and reminding us of Timberland’s monster records and production with a Justin Timberlake singing style. “Voodoo” sounds like a young Justin Timberlake in essence. The same thing that made us fall for Justin as a solo artist is the reason why we are falling for Nick. The change to pop seems like a perfect switch from the Jonas Brother adolescent music. The breakup toast heard around the world is in the song “Champagne Problems”. It is filled with percussion and bassy synths that we love to hear in a pop song.
“Close” featuring Tove Lo is such a sexy love adult way to say “I don’t want any space, I want you!” and we as listeners are so here for that message Nick Jonas. “Bacon” is by far the cutest song out at this time! Nick is trying to embrace bachelorhood as well let the ladies know there’s nothing more that I like than dating you but if I would choose anything different to make me just as happy, it’s bacon. And everyone knows that bacon solves the world’s problems (we joke, we joke, we kid, we kid)! The beats are upbeat, Timberland resembled, and Nick’s falsetto gets the women every single time.
We rate this album B+. What were your thoughts on the album? Go cop it.
